I had a client reach out to me who wanted help redesigning their basement. The basement was a hang out area for their teenage kids and she wanted to make it more inviting and functional. Their kids love music, board games, and books so storage was key. It also had to feel young and fun, yet be something they could grow into. This was such a fun project because I’ve never designed a space for a teenager before. My kids are still young, so it’s always been more kid friendly designs in our house. I have to admit, I asked my daughter a few times if the space looked “cool” enough. The only other requests were keeping their existing coffee table, paint scheme if possible, and adding a privacy partition to section off part of the basement.
To start, I created a few idea boards to see what style they liked best. We ended up going with this concept which is black/gray/white with natural wood tones. After the family approved the design and floor plan, it was time to get shopping! My client didn’t want to wait for long lead times so we ended up swapping some of the furniture out to “ready to ship” items. Everything arrived within two weeks and then it was time to set up!
